In Defence of Welfare 2

I was pleased to learn today that the Social Policy Association have just published the follow up to their In Defence of Welfare collection of essays that did so much to challenge forthcoming welfare reforms when it was published in 2011.

This second edition, In Defence of Welfare 2, brings together nearly fifty short pieces from a diverse range of academics, policy makers and journalists to explore the impact of those reforms at a time when a general election is looming.

I did a short piece making the case for a legally-enshrined right to employment services in response to the experience of the Work Programme, whereby some claimants – especially those identified by providers as being further from the labour market – are getting a raw deal in terms of the support offered.  While a legal right toe employment support might seem very blue skies in a UK context, it is worth noting that such a right has existed for decades in a number of other European countries.
